- It seems trite to draw users attention to this, were it not for the error being perpetuated in some eminent arbitral publications: The capital of the United States of America is the town of Washington, which lies in (totally occupies, in fact) the District of Columbia. Washington D.C. in the East is not to be confused with the state of Washington on the western Seaboard.
